This is Stratford-on-Avon District Council's fourth Environmental Public Statement. The first was published in April 1997 when the Council initially made a commitment to improving its environmental performance. The second was produced as a result of re-validation of the pledge in July 1998.
As only the third Council in Britain to register under EMAS (the Eco Management and Audit Scheme), a European Union Scheme for managing an organisation's environmental performance, the Council is now at a stage when the results of activities can be gauged against commitments.
Stratford-on-Avon District Council aims, wherever possible, to reduce its impact on the environment and uphold sustainability whilst maintaining the district's economic viability.
The Council believes that the Eco Management and Audit Scheme provides the most comprehensive means of making sure we manage the environment in a rigorous and consistent way. As well as providing a sound framework for Council officers and members to use, it requires us to publish this Statement so that members of the public can scrutinise what the Council is doing.
