Health and Wellbeing

Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Health Improvement Service works closely with its partners and makes an active and positive contribution to deliver the prevention elements and other issues contained in the Council's Corporate objectives, Community Plan and other related plans and strategies.

Improving the health of people within the District has been identified as an issue. Many people within the District still smoke, obesity is becoming more common, the ageing population presents challenges not just in terms of illness but also preventing falls etc. Health issues for young people present particular challenges when dealing with subjects such as teenage pregnancy and depression.

The District Council also works closely with primary and secondary schools to promote and deliver health messages, particularly on issues relating to healthy eating including the importance of 5-a-day and the balance of good health. Link to the WCC EBP webpage.

A Health Policy has been developed which, whilst reflecting the objectives outlined in national priorities and targets, concentrates on the local needs identified in the Community Plans and the Corporate Strategies. It also makes a significant contribution to the County Strategic Plan (which this District Council has endorsed) and South Warwickshire Primary Care Trust Delivery Plan.

The Government's Health Strategy highlights six key priorities for delivery based upon more people making more healthy choices:-

  • Tackling Health Inequalities
  • Reducing the numbers of people who smoke
  • Tackling obesity
  • Improving sexual health
  • Improving mental health and wellbeing
  • Reducing harm and encouraging sensible drinking

People will be supported to take greater responsibility for their own welfare, including diet and physical activities; through health promotion, support and advice provided in ways that meet their needs.
