Firework Guidance

Fireworks as part of a controlled event can be an enjoyable and spectacular experience. However, if misused fireworks can be very disturbing or dangerous. On the 7th August 2004 the Firework Regulations came into force in an attempt to better control the sale and use of fireworks by the general public. The regulations state:

• No member of the public under the age of eighteen shall be allowed to posses an adult firework.
• No member of the public shall possess a category 4 firework.
• No person shall use an adult firework during night hours (11pm to 7am) except for permitted displays, displays for local authority or national public celebration. Except - 11pm - 1am on Chinese New Year, 11pm - 12pm on 5th November, 11pm - 1am on Diwali an 11pm - 1am on New Years Eve.
• There shall be no category 3 fireworks which, when used, produces a maximum A-weighted impulse sound level exceeding 120 decibels.
• Suppliers of fireworks who supply them all year round will require a licence. Other retailers may sell fireworks - 3 days before Chinese New Year, 3 days before Diwali, 15th October - November 10th and 26th - 31st December.
