Situated to the south of Henley-in-Arden, Wootton Wawen is one of the oldest villages in Warwickshire. Lying in the basin of the River Alne, the name is derived from: ‘Wudutun', a settlement in a wood (the Forest of Arden) belonging to the Saxon (freeholder) ‘Wagen'. An early 8th century charter established a minster church here which became St Peter's, at the heart of which lies the Saxon Sanctuary, built in the 11th century. Wooton Hall was built in 1687. A 19th century aqueduct carries the Stratford Canal over the A3400.
