Rabies is a viral disease of the central nervous system, which is almost always fatal once the clinical signs have developed. It can affect all mammals, both domesticated and wild, which become infected through contact with infected animals.
At the moment this country is free of rabies and stringent safety rules are in place to ensure this situation remains. Further information can be obtained from the animal health and welfare section of the website of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
