This page covers BT's 2009 consultation exercise on payphone removal or adoption. BT did not consult in 2010 but the 'Adopt a Kiosk' scheme detailed below is still active and can be accessed from the link at the bottom of the page.
In 2008 BT planned to remove a number of payphones across Stratford District where numbers of calls made were low. Several communities had no objection to losing the telephone service but did not want to lose their red telephone kiosks.
In response BT initiated an 'Adopt a Kiosk' scheme where communities could adopt their boxes for £1 if they agreed to the removal of the phone equipment.
In 2009 BT consulted on the adoption of kiosks to remove the phone equipment from 47 red K2 payphones in Stratford District. 17 of these are Grade II listed kiosks.

Final Decision
The Council sought the views of Parish/Town Councils and Ward Members and has now issued a final decision which proposes to object to the removal of 23 of the payphones listed above. (In bold text.) It is minded to agree to the removal, or removal of the telephone equipment, of the remaining 24. In a number of cases Parish Councils have indicated that they are willing to adopt the kiosk to retain it as a feature in their community. The final decision was agreed by The Cabinet on 2 November 2009 and has been forwarded to BT. The schedule and notification which form the Council's final decision can be downloaded below.
