Stratford District Council is committed to keeping the district as clean and litter-free as possible.
Litter includes food and small items such as cigarette ends as well as large items such as bags or food and drinks containers.
What we do
- Clear litter from public highways and open spaces for which we are responsible
- Remove fly tips from public highways
- Investigate and prosecute people who drop litter or dump rubbish
- Maintain and empty litter bins across the district
- Work with private landowners where litter is a problem
- Work with businesses, schools and other organisations to encourage a responsible attitude to preventing litter
- Undertake covert surveillance in areas where fly tipping is a recurrent problem where practicable
- Consider the use of Litter Control Notices and Control Areas for 'Prescribed Premises' if problems persist.
'Prescribed Premises' are those that have been identified by the Secretary of State as having the potential to be a source of a litter problem including food and drink outlets, petrol stations, leisure centres, premises which cashpoints and premises which sell lottery tickets.
What we don't do
- Clear litter from privately owned land
- Clear litter or investigate complaints on any area outside the District
However, if the land is privately owned and not accessible by the public, but is affected by litter or fly tipping which causes a public nuisance or environmental health issue, we may take action under other legislation against the landowner to get the material removed.
Dropping litter is an offence
Dropping or leaving litter is an offence. This includes litter thrown or dropped out of a car. Anyone dropping litter may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 or may be prosecuted at Court and fined up to £2,500.
Are you planning to carry out a litter clean up event?
If you would like to hold a litter clean up event to help improve your local environment, please let us know as we may be able to provide advice and support.
If you contact us (details below) before the event, we may be able to provide sacks, gloves or litter pickers for you to use and arrange collection of the sacks of litter when you have finished the event.
