Each year, Stratford-on-Avon District Council works in partnership with Stratford Upon Avon College Performing Arts department and South Warwickshire Dietetic Service to take theatre into education. Through this process, important messages about the benefits of regular physical acitivity and healthy eating are conveyed to primary school children in a way that is fun and interesting.
As well as spreading these messages, the project provides valuable workplace experience for the 110 students at Stratford Upon Avon college who write and produce the plays, make the props and provide actors, dancers and singers.
This year's programme 'The Fit For Life Tour' visited 47 primary schools across the district in five days, reaching in the region of 10,000 children and was hailed by both pupils and teachers as some of the best performances they have seen.
This project has proved to be so effective that it won a national award for 'excellence, innovation and creativity' in food safety communication in 2002. In addition, the project has helped the college to achieve grade one status in performing arts.
