The District Council works closely with a wide range of partners to provide affordable homes for rent or sale to local people.
We have a strong track record of partnership working: over 600 new affordable homes have been built during the past five years.
In particular we work with:
- Local communities, who can undertake local housing needs surveys and prepare Parish Plans (or equivalent) promoting new housing schemes and setting criteria. Click on the link for more information
- The Council's partner housing associations who develop new homes:
- Developers and house-builders, to ensure sufficient affordable homes of the right type are provided as part of larger housing schemes.

The involvement of the Council's partner housing associations from an early stage is important in the development of new housing. This ensures:
- The right type, size and tenure of housing gets built.
- House designs are sufficiently sustainable and versatile.
- High standards of development, management and local accountability.
- All new homes are genuinely affordable.
- All new homes are occupied only by local people with a genuine housing need (through nominations of tenants or purchasers from the Council's Housing Waiting List).
