Waste recovery (or 'Energy from Waste') is a process where energy is created by the burning of waste. This combustion process produces steam that can be converted to electrical power. This electricity can then be used by local industry or channeled back into the national grid.
In addition to this, Combined Heat and Power Plants also produce hot water or steam to be used for industrial or domestic heating.
These plants are highly efficient and are, according to Government policy, are a preferable environmental option to the landfilling of waste.
Currently, a proportion of the household refuse, collected from grey wheeled bins in the district, is taken to an Energy from Waste facility at Coventry.
Diverting waste from landfill to treatment sites such as energy from waste facilities reduces its environmental impact.
As part of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, Stratford District Council is committed to moving away from landfill to more sustainable methods of waste management including Energy from Waste options.
