Health & Safety at Work

Health and safety is about preventing people from being harmed by work activities or becoming ill by not taking the right precautions and providing a satisfactory working environment. As health and safety at work is so important, there are rules which require all of us not to put ourselves or others in danger. The law is also there to protect the public from workplace dangers.

Health and safety laws apply to all businesses, however small, and also to the self-employed and to employees.

Inspectors from the Food & Safety Team and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforce the legislation. Local Authorities enforce in offices, public houses, shops, hotels, catering premises and leisure activities. The HSE inspect factories, mines, fairground rides, building sites, local government offices etc. We visit workplaces to check that people are complying with the rules. We investigate some accidents and complaints but mainly we help you to understand what you need to do. We enforce only when something is seriously wrong.

You can contact an inspector at Elizabeth House or use a confidential telephone information service called Infoline which is open Monday - Friday between 8 am and 6 pm. You can contact Infoline by telephoning 08701 545500 or by fax on 02920 859260, or e-mail hseinformationservices@natbrit.com.
