Food Inspection Ratings

The STRATFORD Hygiene Award Scheme

You can search here for all the registered Hotels, Restaurants, Cafes, Takeaways, Guest Houses and Bed & Breakfast accommodation together with retail and other catering premises, and covers the whole of the Stratford-on-Avon District Council area and includes the market towns of Alcester, Henley-in-Arden, Shipston-on-Stour, Southam and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council has a duty under the Food Safety Act 1990 to inspect food businesses in the district to ensure that food hygiene standards are maintained. While the legislation is aimed at protecting consumers it only provides a minimum standard of protection resulting in businesses being able to trade irrespective of whether they are judged to be poor or good by the food inspector. The legislation has previously prevented local authorities from releasing information about inspections to the public. This allowed businesses to continue trading while consumers were unaware of their poor hygiene practices behind the scenes.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 has introduced the opportunity for local authorities, such as Stratford-on-Avon District Council, to provide this information to the public.

Working with the Stratford-upon-Avon Town Management Partnership and Stratford District Hospitality Association we have established an advisory group to help ensure the scheme highlights best practice and is a positive addition to supporting business, and that the scheme will:

Provide consumers with a user-friendly way to access the information they need to make informed choices about where to eat in the District so promoting consumer choice.
Encourage food businesses where deficiencies are found to improve their standards of food hygiene leading to greater food safety compliance.
Ensure that those food businesses achieving consistently high standards of food hygiene are publicly recognised and rewarded.

The aim of the scheme is to promote those businesses who provide food and drink to consumers that live, work or are visiting Stratford District. It encourages best practice within these businesses and drives them to achieve excellence, resulting in reduced incidence of ill health, improved standards and will act as an example to those who might otherwise be satisfied with achieving minimal standards of hygiene compliance.
