Hackney carriages are commonly called Taxis. The vehicles and drivers are the subject of stringent tests. Vehicles are tested for roadworthiness annually and in some cases twice yearly. Drivers are also expected to under go a full medical, obtain a criminal record check and successfully pass a driving test with The Driving Standards Agency. It is an offence if you drive whilst unlicensed and it also invalidates the vehicle insurance. Unlicensed drivers and vehicles do not benefit from the mandatory safety measures used by the council to ensure that vehicles are a safe and convenient form of transport.
The main features of a hackney carriage are: it can carry passengers for hire or reward; it can be hailed by a prospective passenger; and it can park on a designated rank to await the approach of passengers.
Hackney carriages are metered and the district council, in consultation with the taxi community, prescribes the fares. Please click on the links on the right to see the table of tariffs.
